Opt for a Firm(er) Mattress
When you sleep, your spine can rest and rejuvenate. But, you can imagine how little rest and rejuvenation it gets if your body is sinking into your mattress for 8 hours each night. Ideally, your mattress should be firm and support your spine. Additionally, if you use a pillow under your legs (back sleepers) or between your legs (side sleepers), you are helping your spine achieve natural alignment while you sleep.
Work Out Your Core & Back Muscles
Your abdominal and back muscles can drastically help your spine, as these muscles remove extra pressure off these bones. If your muscles are not strong, much of your body’s weight will fall on your spine to carry you through the day. Be Intentional About Your Shoes
When you take a step, you are setting the foundation for the rest of your body to follow. If your shoes are too tight or too big, you cannot walk properly, and your step pattern will be negatively affected. This will cause pain in your lower back, knees, hips, and other areas.
A few ways you can help your feet (and spine) is by implementing the following tips:
- Avoid flat shoes or high heels
- Make sure you can wiggle your toes in your shoes
- Opt for a cushioned sole
- Use soles in flat shoes
Limit Your Sitting Time
Americans have a very sedentary lifestyle, contributing to spine and back pain! It’s important to limit your total sitting time as much as possible. If you are able, take breaks from sitting during your workday to stretch and walk around. This will give your spine a break from pressure it receives when you’re sitting.
