Brain Food: Avoid These Detrimental Foods

This entry was posted in News

In last month’s article, we focused on food that contributes to optimal brain health. As much as we want you to fill your plate with superfoods, we also want to encourage you to ditch unhealthy brain food! Consider these five foods to avoid.

Brain Food to Avoid: Drinks with High Fructose Corn Syrup

Many sugary drinks contain an excessive amount of high fructose corn syrup. A high sugar intake will increase your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, brain inflammation, and other serious conditions. We encourage you to ditch the sodas, energy drinks, and sports drinks, and replace it with refreshing water. (Your brain will thank you!)

Brain Food to Avoid: Food with Refined Carbohydrates

To understand why refined carbs are so detrimental to your health, you must understand the refining process. When a manufacturer refines carbs, they are taking a whole grain and splitting it a part. During this process, essential components are removed such as minerals, vitamins, and dietary fiber. Concerning the brain, if you have a diet filled with refined carbs, your memory will likely be impaired.

Brain Food to Avoid: Sweetener with Aspartame

Many people opt for drinks with aspartame, an artificial sweetener, when they are trying to lose weight and avoid sugar. However, aspartame may not be the best choice, as it can lead to decreased cognitive function, higher stress, and more irritability.

Brain Food to Avoid: Mercury-Filled Fish

Fish that does not contain mercury is great for your brain! Most fish are filled with omega-3 fatty acids which help the structure of brain neurons. However, fish that have high levels of mercury are not good for your brain, as the mercury will settle in the brain, liver, and kidneys. Young children’s bodies and fetuses have an especially hard time processing mercury.
