This year, we welcomed our newest neurosurgeon – Dr. Igor DeCastro. His level of experience and depth of knowledge adds to our incredibly robust team of physicians. We invite you to discover more about Dr. DeCastro and how his passion to help people made him into the neurosurgeon he is today!
Dr. DeCastro’s Passion, Awards, & Residency Programs
Dr. DeCastro knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a physician. This is largely due to his father’s profession as an OBGYN. His father helped many patients in his home country of Brazil, and Dr. DeCastro knew then he wanted to help people, too.
He completed neurosurgical residency programs in both Brazil and in the United States at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). While at UAMS, Dr. DeCastro was honored as the “Resident of the Year” three times and he became the first Resident to receive the “Chris Hackler Ethics Award.” In addition to schooling and residency programs, he was selected to participate as a research fellow and learned from two of the best and brightest minds in the industry – Gazi Yasargil, MD, and Ossama Al-Mefty, MD.
Dr. DeCastro Gives Back to the Community
Before moving to the United States in 2004, he practiced his profession at the Air Force Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. During that time, he collaborated on several papers with the President of the Brazilian Neurosurgical Society, assisted in the creation of the Microsurgical Laboratory in the Air Force Hospital, and taught a Microsurgical Anatomy of the Brain course at Cranio-Cervical Junction workshop. These actions undoubtedly led to a stronger and healthier community.
If you have a brain or spinal cord condition or tumor, Dr. DeCastro can help you. He specializes in both minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques to help his patients find relief. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with your neurosurgeon, Dr. DeCastro.
